In Heian times, Japanese noblewomen dressed in jūnihitoe—a formal kimono composed of twelve layers of fabric. Seasonal choices in the color, texture, and pattern of the kimono layers were used to express each woman’s individual aesthetic preferences. These collages are each created with only twelve layers of paper, suggesting a variety of different locations, moods, and seasons.
