Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji), is a Japanese literary classic, written by Murasaki Shikibu around 1000 CE and considered to be the first novel ever written. Inspired by illustrations which often accompanied the Genji text, these reliefs simulate the fukinuki yatai (blown off roof perspective) used in Japanese paintings of the Heian period. They present glimpses through clouds into empty living spaces interwoven into the surrounding landscapes, and are filled with color and texture along with echoes of the tale.
